Vault is a secret and encryption management system that allows users, apps, and systems to be authenticated and authorized to access resources. Vault also provides an audit trail to capture and preserve a history of client actions.
It works by authenticating a client and validating them against third-party trusted sources. The client is then matched against a Vault security policy, which defines the API endpoints to which the client has access with their Vault token.
Vault grants access to secrets, keys, and encryption capabilities by issuing a token based on policies associated with the client's identity. Vault can be installed and run on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), a managed Kubernetes service offered by Google Cloud, in standard or autopilot mode.
Standard mode allows for more flexibility in configuring the cluster's infrastructure, while autopilot mode offers an optimized cluster with a hands-off experience.
